How to Become an Ohio Notary Public

  1. Find an approved WebCheck provider to conduct a criminal records search. You will receive a BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigations) report (make sure there are no disqualifying offenses.)
  2. Find an Ohio-approved Notary education and testing provider (can be found here). There is a three hour mandatory training course followed by an exam. 
  3. Sign up for an account with the Ohio Secretary of State, and complete the Notary application form.
  4. Submit the PDF copy of your criminal records check, your course and test certificates, and a picture of your signature. You will also need to submit a $15 filing fee.
  5. You will receive your commission certificate via email as well as instructions on how to complete your oath of office.
  6. Purchase your individualized Ohio Notary Stamp.

Requirements to Become a Ohio Notary

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a resident of Ohio or a non-resident attorney who practices law in Ohio and whose principal place of business or practice is in Ohio
  • Not have a criminal background history
